Navigating the Future of WA’s Waters

Welcome to Western Australian Nautical Initiatives (WANI)—the state’s premier hub for maritime innovation, coastal stewardship, and engineering excellence. Based in Perth, we are a collective of maritime professionals, environmental advocates, and engineers dedicated to bridging the gap between Western Australia’s rich seafaring heritage and the sustainable "Blue Economy" of tomorrow.

From the turquoise reaches of the Kimberley to the rugged swells of the Great Southern, we're enthusiastic.

Our Story

Our Story

"WANI is the engineering force behind a smarter Western Australian coastline. From AI navigation to electric propulsion, we are modernizing how the West interacts with the water while honoring the vessels that built our identity."

WANI serves as the compass for a smarter, safer, and cleaner maritime industry. We believe that our vast coastline—one of the longest and most diverse in the world—demands localized expertise and forward-thinking technology.

What We Do

We don't just dream of a sustainable ocean; we engineer the tools to get there. Our work focuses on four core areas designed to protect our waters and empower those who work and play upon them.

  • Maritime Innovation: Implementing 21^{st}-century tech, from AI-driven navigation to IoT fleet monitoring.

  • Sustainable Propulsion: Leading the transition to electric and hybrid vessel systems to reduce our carbon footprint.

  • Heritage Preservation: Documenting and restoring the historic vessels that built the West Australian identity.

  • Community Safety: Providing the resources and advocacy needed to navigate WA’s unique tidal and weather patterns safely.

Our Vision for the Coast

At WANI, we see a future where Perth’s iconic Swan River is quiet and carbon-neutral, where our commercial fleets lead the world in efficiency, and where every West Aussie has the knowledge to enjoy our ocean responsibly. Whether you are a commercial operator, a recreational boatie, or a conservationist, WANI is your partner on the water.

The horizon is moving. Let's reach it together.

Western Australian Nautical Initiatives (WANI) Announces Landmark “Green Horizon” Partnership to Electrify the Swan River PERTH, WA – February 28, 2026

A future full of promise, progress & productivity.

Western Australian Nautical Initiatives (WANI), the state’s leading advocate for maritime innovation and heritage, today announced a premier partnership with Global Marine Tech to launch the “Green Horizon” initiative. This collaboration marks the largest investment in sustainable propulsion in Western Australian history, aiming to transition 25% of the Swan River’s commercial charter fleet to hybrid or fully electric systems by 2030.

Founded in 2015, WANI has spent over a decade serving as the compass for a smarter maritime industry. The “Green Horizon” project represents the culmination of that journey, moving beyond advocacy into the large-scale engineering of a carbon-neutral waterway.

“Our vast coastline demands more than just traditional methods; it demands forward-thinking technology,” said the Spokesperson for WANI. “By bringing 21st-century electric propulsion to Perth’s iconic Swan River, we aren't just reducing our carbon footprint—we are ensuring that the quiet beauty of our waters is preserved for every West Aussie.”

The Green Horizon initiative will focus on three key deliverables:

  • The E-Retrofit Subsidy: Providing technical expertise and financial incentives for local operators to swap aging diesel engines for high-efficiency electric motors.

  • Solar-Aided Docking: Installing the first network of solar-powered rapid-charging stations at key jetties between Elizabeth Quay and Fremantle.

  • Real-time IoT Monitoring: Utilizing WANI’s proprietary AI-driven navigation tools to optimize energy consumption for vessels navigating WA’s unique tidal patterns.

This partnership reinforces WANI’s vision of a future where the maritime industry leads the world in efficiency and environmental stewardship. As the horizon moves, WANI continues to engineer the tools to reach it.
